Another year, another Edinburgh Fringe. All goes quiet on the London culture scene, as arts lovers head north of the border to catch some of the brightest lights in comedy, theatre and performance.

There are just a few days left of this year’s festival, but there’s still plenty going on before it draws to a close on bank holiday Monday (August 26).

The Edinburgh Comedy Award shortlist was revealed earlier this week, and the winner of this year’s prize will be announced on Saturday (August 24). It’s a formidable list, with Darren Harriott, Ivo Graham, London Hughes and Spencer Jones among those in the running for the best show. Catherine Cohen, Janine Harouni, Nigel Ng and Sophie Duker are some of the names in the running for the best newcomer award. (See the shortlist in full here.) We have plenty of comedy recommendations if you’re looking for a giggle before you get the train home, or a reminder of the big names who've taken the top prize in the past.

There's still time to catch some of the most talked about shows of the festival, including Richard Gadd’s five-star Baby Reindeer, Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum With Expats, Lucy McCormick’s Post Popular and Do Our Best. Check here for our recommendations of the best theatre to see.

It’s also the place where you might catch the next big writing star - the great big Edinburgh legend of our times is that it was the starting ground for Fleabag. Check our recommendations for the best new writing to see.
