Eating less sugar can save your marriage, according to the Glucose Goddess

Marriages go through many ups and downs. From having children and financial difficulties to simply keeping the spark alive throughout the humdrum of daily life, many factors may cause some marital riffs.

A lesser known consideration, though, may be the food you eat, and how that can impact your union. Jessie Inchauspé, also known as the Glucose Goddess, is a biochemist and advocate for better health through nutrition.

The New York Times bestselling author is on a mission to help people control their blood sugar levels but while appearing on Steven Bartlett's podcast late last year, the Glucose Goddess had a few home truths for couples.

The expert, who is fronting a new Channel 4 series 'Eat Smart: Secrets of The Glucose Goddess, revealed the inner workings of a "great study" which looked at 300 married couples and how grub affected the synergy between them.

"Each person in the marriage was given a voodoo doll representing their spouse," Jessie explained. "Scientists then asked them to put a pin in the voodoo doll of their spouse every time their spouse annoyed them for six weeks.

"At the end of the study, they took all the voodoo dolls and counted the pins. They also measured the participants glucose levels. What they found is that those who had more variable glucose levels... had put more pins in the voodoo doll representing their spouse.

"So, their glucose levels seem to be linked to how irritated they were with their partner.

"The scientists speculated that this had to do with a neurotransmitter called tyrosine, and the more glucose rollercoaster you have going on, the lower your tyrosine levels. And tyrosine balances our mood."

Concluding the findings, Jessie went on: "So, the food you eat can impact your marriage, can impact how you show up with others, and can impact how you feel about other people's behaviour. It goes really deep.

"It's not just about diabetes. It impacts who you are as a person and your personality."

Steven then asked, "So, if I stop eating sugar, it will save my marriage?" to which Jessie replied: "You said it!"

People in the comment section were split. One woman commented: "Or conversely, could a bad marriage contribute to poor diets, and glucose spikes as cortisol increases with emotional stress, too?"

Another chimed in: "Putting a pin in a voodoo doll that represents your spouse, for any reason is a dangerous thing to do."

Meanwhile, a third reasoned: "How many people will turn to chocolate or other sweets precisely BECAUSE they have experienced a negative moment?"

It is not the first time the Glucose Goddess has waded in on such important matters. The 33-year-old recently shared the "super weird" impact adding wine to our food has on our health - and it's not good.
