But if we’re someone who doesn’t pass out the moment the lights go out, what’s the secret to getting a little more shut eye?
According to a study, eating a couple of kiwis could do the trick.
A month-long study by Taiwan Taipei Medical University involving 24 volunteers – who already had existing sleep problems – found that those that ate the fruit slept for 13% longer.
They spent less time laying awake, too, as the amount of time it took them to fall asleep once in bed decreased by an entire 35%.
The subjects aged 20 to 55 ate two of the fruit an hour before bed nightly for four weeks, and using a three day sleep diary, an activity logger and a Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, researchers assessed the parameters of rest quality including how long it took them to drift off and how long for.
After four weeks of eating kiwis, these aspects improved:
“Kiwifruit consumption may improve sleep onset, duration, and efficiency in adults with self-reported sleep disturbances,” the study’s authors wrote.
“Further investigation of the sleep-promoting properties of kiwifruit may be warranted.”
