From Monday 3 August, the government is running its Eat Out To Help Out scheme, in a bid to get more people spending money in restaurants post-lockdown.

The plan was unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the budget on 8 July, alongside a reduction in VAT from 20 per cent to five per cent for hospitality and tourism. That measure will be in place till 12 January 2021.

After being closed for months, as a result of the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown, pubs and restaurants were allowed to reopen to diners on 4 July. But many are still struggling to get enough customers through the door.

It is hoped the discount scheme will encourage spending and consumer confidence. But how do you go about getting your money off?

What is the new “Eat Out To Help Out” scheme?

Throughout the month of August, everyone in the UK will be entitled to 50 per cent off their meal when they dine out at participating restaurants, which will have registered through a governmental website.

The discount allows customers a maximum discount of £10 off per person, including children.

It is available to use by consumers on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the month.

How will the remaining cost of the bill be paid?

The government has said that it will ensure all remaining money from the bills at participating restaurants, pubs and cafes is paid back when the discount is used.

Having registered to be a part of the scheme through the website mentioned by Mr Sunak, the businesses can then claim back funds, he stated.

“Each week in August, businesses can then claim the money back, with the funds in their bank account within five working days,” the chancellor stated.

Mr Sunak said that it is “vital” that the country sees “the hospitality industry back up and running”, stating that the newly announced measures “will provide an essential lifeline for many UK businesses”.
