It might not sound like the most delicious breakfast in the world – we’d much rather slam down an Egg McMuffin or a giant pile of pancakes – but did you know a banana peel smoothie is, in fact, a great way to start the day?
Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Did you know that you can actually eat banana skins? And that they’re actually very good for you?
They’re high in potassium, dietary fibre, polyunsaturated fats, and essential amino acids. According to Healthline, a study found that banana peels, and particularly unripe banana peels, are also rich in antioxidants.
As mentioned before, they’re great added to smoothies or even blended and chucked into your next banana bread. Don’t pretend you won’t be making one of those this weekend to show off to all your Instagram followers…
The riper the bananas, the tastier the skin as it will be thinner and sweeter, so keep that in mind next time you go banana-shopping.
As well as banana peels being used in smoothies and sweet dishes, Healthline also recommends cutting it into strips and frying or grilling them. This makes them into a great bacon or pulled pork substitute. Who knew!?
Of course, before you go chomping down on banana skins, be sure to give them a good wash, and if possible, choose organic bananas.
