EastEnders' Rainie Highway discovers the truth about Stuart's cancer

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Rainie Highway has finally learned the truth about Stuart's cancer diagnosis in EastEnders.

Her husband had been hiding for months that he's been diagnosed with male breast cancer. While Sonia had urged Stuart to tell Rainie about his diagnosis, he'd refused to do so and even planned to avoid treatment.

In Friday's (January 21) episode, the Highways' were drawn into the ever-complicated dynamic between Mick Carter and Janine Butcher.

Janine had convinced Mick to pose as her partner for her meeting with her daughter Scarlett's social worker Claire as means to help gain custody (but also ensnare Mick).

While the meeting with Claire was going well, Mick was facing the heat down in the Vic when Janine's nemesis Jay Brown discovered the arrangement she'd make with Mick.

Jay was still furious over being stitched up for the car heist by Janine, so he accused Mick of having an affair with Janine in front of the entire pub.

Mick was then forced to make a choice, as he went to tell Janine she needed to come clean now that Jay was onto her. As he returned downstairs, Mick was bombarded by Stuart since he misunderstood Jay's accusation.

Stuart was convinced Mick was having an affair with Rainie, so he slugged his former friend in front Mick's daughter Nancy, Sonia Fowler and Rainie herself.

Rainie stepped in to clear up the confusion, explaining to Stuart that she'd asked Mick for some help as she tried to find Vi Highway.

With Sonia's urging, Stuart decided it was finally time to share with his wife about the health concerns he was now facing.

"I'm so sorry, darling," he explained to a stunned Rainie. "I think I thought, if I didn't, maybe it'd stop it from happening. I just don't want to leave you and I don't want you to leave me."

As Stuart began weeping, Rainie pulled her husband close to comfort him. The two cried together in the Square as Sonia watched on to end the episode.

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
