Before & After: Dull garden transformed into colourful outdoor space with cinema

Interior stylist Kel Harmer has transformed her tired-looking outdoor space into a stunning alfresco cinema area – and it's providing plenty of inspiration.

With many of us getting our outdoor spaces ready for the summer months ahead, Kel (@ohsokel) shows us how to create a garden that feels like a natural extension of the home. From repainting her red brick wall white, to adding IKEA window boxes to break up the space, a little imagination can go a long way.

Before Kel's renovation project, the well-sized garden needed a little modernising. Incredibly spacious with room for potential, Kel knew exactly how she wanted to transform it.

As the garden was coming together, Kel began to hang fairy lights and install a swinging egg chair.

Wow, what a transformation! After lots of TLC and a much-needed pop of colour, this garden overhaul ticks all the right boxes.

Kel explains: "The eyesore sub-station in the garden has been transformed into a feature (we didn't really have a choice!) by painting the brick white and adding a fire surround, plus mirrors which have been painted in Annie Sloan and Cuprinol paint".

How inviting does this outdoor seating area look? From the garden cushions to the tropical rug, it's the perfect place for whiling away a lazy summer's afternoon.

"To create the DIY Movie Night we used string, pegs and a kingsize white sheet to create the screen and a projector which we placed on a garden table and ran the leads underneath the seating to prevent hazards," says Kel.

From the egg chair to the neon sign, Kel has created a feel-good space.

"Inspired by a trip to Miami, we've loved bringing the mix of pastels, palm prints, flamingo and Art Deco geometric shapes to the garden," Kel explains.
