Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has announced she’s written her first adult novel - and that it’s being released by romantic fiction powerhouse Mills & Boon.

The royal, who wrote the highly successful children’s Budgie The Little Helicopter books in the 1990s, as well as her memoirs and non-fiction about Queen Victoria, has now turned her hand to more racy endeavours.

Sarah’s historical romantic work, Her Heart for A Compass, is based on the life of one of her great aunts, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.

The book takes place in the late 1800s in Queen Victoria’s court, grandiose houses of Ireland and Scotland, and poor parts of London and New York. While it’s loosely based on historical events, Sarah will bring her own experiences and imagination to the tale.

"I am proud to bring my personal brand of historical fiction to the publishing world," she explains.

"It all started with researching my ancestry. Digging into the history of the Montagu-Douglas Scotts, I first came across Lady Margaret, who intrigued me because she shared one of my given names."

"But although her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, were close friends with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, I was unable to discover much about my namesake's early life, and so was born the idea which became Her Heart for a Compass."

Sarah was also behind the idea for the film Young Victoria, which starred Emily Blunt - so she’s got form in the historical fiction world. We can’t wait to read!
