Duchess of Sussex avoids controversy because of baby Archie

The Duchess of Sussex has opened up about how becoming a mother has made her both braver and more cautious. She also said that every recent personal and professional decision made has been with her son Archie in mind.

“Everything I’m doing is for Archie, our son. Perhaps from the outside it could look risky,” Meghan said in an interview at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit.

“But… if you’re living an authentic life, I don’t even know if you would define it as a risk anymore. You just do what’s right.”

She said that motherhood has in some ways made her feel more courageous because she wants her son to inherit a better world.

"The things that you're able to tolerate on your own are not the same," she said. "At the same time, I am cautious of putting my family in a position of risk by certain things, and so I try to be rather very clear with what I say and to not make it controversial, but instead to talk about things that seem fairly straight forward - like exercising your right to vote."

The former royal also outlined how her relationship with social media has changed. Meghan deactivated her own personal Instagram account before marrying Prince Harry in 2018 and says it’s unlikely she will return to social media after stepping down as a senior member of the royal family.

“For my own self-preservation, I have not been on social media for a very long time. I'd had a personal account years ago, which I closed down, and then we had one through the institution and our office that was in the UK—separate from us, that wasn't managed by us, that was a whole team," she said. "I think that comes with a territory for the job that you have. I've made a personal choice to not have any account. So I don't know what's out there and in many ways, that's helpful for me. I have a lot of concerns for people that have become obsessed with it.

"It is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it's an addiction like many others," she continued. "There is something algorithmically that is creating this obsession, and I think it's very unhealthy for a lot of people. I would just say, as you are out there building your brand, as you're out there engaging with your friends online, just be conscious of what you're doing and understand that it is not limited to that one moment."
