Countless surveys have found the cockapoo to be the UK’s favourite dog breed and you need only take a stroll around your local park to see the evidence. But could this also be the year that the nation’s love for the cocker spaniel/ poodle cross makes the transition to our wardrobes?
The Duchess of Cambridge certainly seems to think so. On a visit to Lancashire on Thursday, she met 10-week-old puppy Alfie who is training to be a support dog at Clitheroe Community Hospital. As she cuddled the toffee-coloured pup, she remarked that he ‘matches my coat’.
While it would likely have been a stretch for the Duchess to have planned her outfit around her meeting with Alfie, the moment certainly served to exhibit just why ‘cockapoo’ is the perfect colour to invest in for 2022.
The dogs can come in various shades, but the most recognisable tone is a creamy, caramel colour which, in clothing form, is warm, flattering and incredibly elegant.
Kate’s cockapoo-hued look on Thursday consisted of a Massimo Dutti coat which she has been seen wearing four times since she debuted it in 2020 and a matching £145 polo neck and £165 skirt set from Iris and Ink, The Outnet’s in-house collection which recently relaunched with a sustainable ethos. The Duchess completed the look with suede boots, thought to be from Saint Laurent.
Previously, we might have described these shades as camel or pale brown, but now ‘cockapoo’ is the only word that will do, and if you’re going to invest in any colour this winter, make it this.
Cockapoo makes an uplifting change from the more traditional winter shades of black, navy and grey but isn’t as high-maintenance as wearing cream. It looks wonderful with other colours, too - especially red (as the Duchess has shown in the past) or bottle green.
While the best cockapoo pieces might one have been created by designer labels, there are plenty of options in this beautifully appealing shade on the high street this season too.
These are the best cockapoo buys to try now - and how to wear them…
The cockapoo coat
Like the Duchess of Cambridge, your cockapoo dressing journey should begin with a fabulous coat. No matter what you’re wearing underneath, with this over the top, you’ll have the sophisticated but effortless look that the colour conveys down pat in one item. And you could even wear it for a dog walk.

The cockapoo hoodie

The cockapoo skirt
Smart, sleek and as good with flat boots as with heels, Massimo Dutti’s A-line skirt would be a great back-to-the-office investment. Channel the Duchess of Cambridge and pair it with a coordinating polo neck knit and suede knee-high boots.

The cockapoo trousers
Wide-leg, Katharine Hepburn-style trousers are another key workwear staple to have in your repertoire, and a cockapoo-coloured pair will set you apart from more predictable black or navy whilst still allowing you to wear almost any other colour jumper or shirt with them. These would look wonderful with a tonal knit in a similar hue (like the hoodie above) or a crisp pale blue shirt.
