Since she started dating Prince William, Kate Middleton and her relatives have become one of the most famous families in the UK. But according to one MP, their celebrity status makes them no different to the Kardashians.

Emma Dent Coad, the MP for Kensington and Chelsea, said the Middletons were similar to the world-famous reality TV family because they had the status of "film stars".

Speaking at a convention for the anti-royalist campaign group Republic in Newcastle, Dent Coad, whose constituency includes Kensington Palace and Grenfell Tower, criticised the royal family and said she "despised" the way tax is spent on them.

"I say the Middletons are like the Kardashians now, because they are such film stars," she said according to the The Daily Mail. "It just shows how much it has all changed."

She added: "I would say if we are going to have princes and princesses then I would rather it was the Beckhams, because they have earned their own money."

The Labour MP also said it was "hysterical" that some Conservatives MPs, who have supported Kensington Palace, have described the Cambridges as "vulgar".

When the Queen visited Grenfell Tower after last month's fire, Dent Coad, who won the former Tory-stronghold of Kensington in June's general election, revealed that she turned down the opportunity to meet the monarch.

The MP's comments come after major extension plans for Kensington Palace recently caused controversy in the borough. A new policy introduced by Kensington & Chelsea Council is trying to limit the spread of 'mega-basements' in the area, but thanks to the status of the Palace's residents, multiple reports said it's likely that planning officials will be encouraged to make an "exception" in this case.
