This dream trip takes you through the Scottish Highlands with Carol Kirkwood
Always wanted to experience Scotland's most awe-inspiring scenery while experiencing its lochs and mountains by steam?
Next October, you can take in the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands, as well as Scotland's stunning lochs on Prima's exclusive rail trip with TV weather presenter and former Strictly contestant Carol Kirkwood.
The unforgettable rail trip will take you through some of the country's most beautiful scenery as you sit back and enjoy the company of Carol, who grew up here, while you experience the luxury of travelling by steam train and boat.
What can you expect from the trip?
Sail to the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s first rotating boat lift
Beginning at New Port Downie, you will sail to the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s first rotating boat lift.
A marvel of modern engineering, which was first opened by the Queen in 2002, it will raise you gracefully from the Forth & Clyde to the Union Canal in just four minutes.
Travel down the Union Canal to a charming hotel
After sailing down the Union Canal, you will arrive at your accommodation for the next three nights, the cosy Winnock, a coaching inn in the heart of Loch Lomond National Park. Carol will give an after-dinner talk about growing up in the region, her fascinating career and the time she spent on Strictly Come Dancing.
With its pretty gardens and stunning location, it’s the perfect base from which to experience the breathtaking Highlands. As well as breakfast, you can also look forward to dinner served with wine each evening in the hotel’s cosy dining room.
Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig, via the Glenfinnan Viaduct
On the second day, you’ll take the Jacobite steam train from Fort William, passing by the slopes of Ben Nevis and over the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct (as seen in the Harry Potter films).
Carol Kirkwood’s grandfather helped build the railway line, and she’ll be joining you for a ride on the Jacobite. You’ll arrive at Mallaig, a quaint fishing port where you can enjoy a seafood lunch at one of its port-side eateries.
Cruise scenic lochs
The final two days of the trip will be spent on water, first cruising on Loch Lomond as you listen to tales of legendary outlaw and rebel 'Rob Roy' MacGregor. You’ll then visit the impressive neo-Gothic Inveraray Castle, which has been the seat of the Duke of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell, since the 17th century.
The following day will be a relaxing one as you enjoy a cruise on Loch Katrine, crossing its peaceful waters on the steam ship Sir Walter Scott, which has been in service since 1900, as you take in the serene and unspoiled landscapes from its deck.
