Popular drag queen Crystal, who starred in the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, has announced she is suing controversial actor, songwriter and ex-husband of Billie Piper, Laurence Fox. Crystal alleges that a tweet posted by Fox (which has since been deleted) could cause serious damage to her reputation, after he branded her a "paedophile".
The online clash between Fox and Crystal occurred after the actor took offence to a post from Sainsbury's, who tweeted that they were proud to celebrate Black History Month and their diverse workforce and customer base.
"We are proud to celebrate Black History Month together with our Black colleagues, customers and communities and we will not tolerate racism," said the supermarket chain. "We proudly represent and serve our diverse society and anyone who does not want to shop with an inclusive retailer is welcome to shop elsewhere."
To this, Fox responded, "Dear @sainsburys I won’t be shopping in your supermarket ever again whilst you promote racial segregation and discrimination. I sincerely hope others join me. RT #BoycottSainsburys." Upon spotting his boycott tirade, Crystal said, "Imagine being this proud of being a racist! So cringe. Total snowflake behaviour."
It was at this point that Fox re-tweeted Crystal alongside the message "Says the paedophile".
In a statement addressing the situation, Crystal said: "On Sunday, I criticised Laurence Fox for his views regarding Sainsbury's celebrating Black History Month and their commitment to making positive steps towards racial equity. Mr Fox seriously defamed me, and I have instructed Mark Lewis of Patron Law to sue on my behalf.
"I will not stand for racism when I see it, and I will not stand for homophobic defamation when it is directed at me. An accusation of paedophilia is one of the oldest homophobic tropes, and it was very shocking to have that levelled at me, not just by Mr Fox, but also by his many followers who believed him."
Many have rallied around the drag queen in support, offering to donate towards her legal fees. To that, Crystal responded, "Thank you for the outpouring of support! Many of you have asked about donating to my legal fees. This is super generous, but not necessary. Instead, I’d like to take the opportunity to fundraise for Colours Youth Network."
In response to the situation, Fox shared a statement of his own reading: "If the game nowadays is to throw baseless insults and accusations about, then we should all be free to participate. Having said that, I have deleted the tweets posted yesterday, in response to being repeatedly, continuously and falsely smeared as a racist, as they just serve as a distraction to the important work that needs to be done."
Simon Blake, deputy chairman of Stonewall, an LGBT charity, has also launched legal proceedings against Fox after similarly being branded a "paedophile".
Fox announced he was started a political party earlier this year called Reclaim.
Good luck with that, hun...
