If you were a fan of 2019's long-awaited Downton Abbey movie, you'll be thrilled to hear plans for a second film are apparently well underway.
In September 2019, Downton's creator Julian Fellowes and producer Gareth Neame said they had "a plan" for a sequel but everything depended on the success of the first film.
Evidently, the first movie performed well enough for a second film to be greenlit. We know a script has been produced and shared with actors, thanks to Jim Carter, who plays Carson, giving an update on This Morning in late September 2020.
“If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll let you know that we’ve seen a script… The script for a second film is there. We’ve seen it, it’s very funny," he told Phillip and Holly.
Going into more detail, and seemingly confirming the return of all the franchise's key characters, he added:
"It’s got all the same characters in, all the regular characters, and I think the will is - Covid willing - we’ll film it next year. I don't know if I can trust Phillip to keep this secret, but Holly, I know I can trust you!”
Going from Jim's comments, we can expect to see the likes of Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary, Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham) and Allen Leech (Tom Branson) returning for a sequel.
The end of the first movie could suggest that the Dowager Countess, played by Dame Maggie Smith, might not be making an appearance again but as of yet, that remains to be seen.
The first Downton film saw Lady Mary and Lord Grantham attempt to keep their estate a relevant part of the local community, as the country was changing rapidly. Presumably a follow-up movie would continue this storyline while, of course, giving us all the secrets and drama we've come to expect.
