Most families have a 'black sheep' amongst the ranks, even the world's biggest stars. Of course, we might be able to keep any criminal cousins in the closet but when you are a major Hollywood A-lister it isn't so easy to hide your relative's indiscretions. 'Fargo' star Billy Bob Thornton welcomed a daughter named Amanda Brumfield during his marriage to Melissa Lee Gatlin. In 2008, Amanda, 43, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of her best friend’s one-year-old daughter, which occurred while she was babysitting her. Amanda stated that the minor had fallen and hit her head, and autopsy reports indicated that the child had suffered a fractured skull. Brumfield was freed in 2020 after a series of medical and scientific evidence documents were issued. Thornton has not said anything about the case, as it is known that they have been estranged for years.

Nick Hogan, 32, is the son of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, 69. In 2007, Nick got involved in a serious car accident, after the vehicle he was driving in Clearwater, Florida, crashed, leaving his then friend John Graziano with brain damage for life. Nick was sentenced to eight months in a Florida jail, plus five years’ probation, as well as 500 hours of social service. Nick was released in 2008 after showing good behavior.

‘Legally Blonde’ actress Reese Witherspoon, 46, has an older brother named John, 50. In 2002, John was sentenced to two years’ probation after breaking into his neighbor’s home, where he began kissing and touching her while she was asleep. John, who admitted to being drunk during the incident, was also forced to attend weekly meetings at Vanderbilt Institute for the Treatment of Addiction, located in Nashville.

Queen of Pop Madonna’s brother Anthony Ciccone was arrested in 2013 after entering a Michigan bookstore with a blood alcohol level of .40, which is five times the legal limit in that state. Anthony had previously been arrested after trespassing in a church, where he was swearing in front of minors while being drunk. The latter resulted in Anthony sentenced to one month in prison.

'Star Wars' Hayden Christensen, 41, has an older brother named Tove, 50, who also works in the entertainment industry as a film producer. In 2009, TMZ reported that the latter had been arrested after attacking his then girlfriend, whom he pushed to the ground before getting in his car. Then, when she was able to reach the vehicle in an attempt to grab her belongings, Tove started driving and dragged her down the street. Tove Christensen was sentenced to three years of probation, one year of domestic violence counselling, and community service.

When 'Spider-Man' star Tobey Maguire, 47, was younger, his father Vincent decided to rob a bank, close to their home, in broad daylight, without even trying to cover his face. The result? Vincent was arrested and spent two years in prison. According to ABC News, Maguire Sr. was caught after a neighbor saw him carrying a bag full of cash.

‘Gossip Girl’ star Leighton Meester, 36, was born in prison, while her mother Constance was serving time for a drug conviction. It is known that, at the time of her birth, her mother still had to complete 16 months of her sentence, so she was raised by her grandmother. In an interview with Us Weekly in 2008, Meester reflected on her family situation, saying: “It makes me very non-judgmental and open-minded. And I think it just makes me appreciate the things that I have now. She’s always there for me no matter what. I swear, that woman knows everything.”

Michael Douglas, 78, and Diandra Morrell welcomed their son Cameron into the world in 1978, when they were married. Cameron, 44, has faced multiple legal issues, and has been arrested on several occasions for drug offences. In 2010, Cameron was sentenced to five years in prison, after trying to distribute drugs while under house arrest. At the time, 'Basic Instinct' star Michael said: “I’ve taken blame about being a bad father - if being a bad father is working your butt off trying to create a career at one time,” In 2011, Cameron had four-and-a-half years added to his sentence for possessing drugs while in prison. In 2013 he was isolated from other inmates after traces of substances were found in his system. He was freed in 2016.

Best known for projects like ‘Good Luck Chuck’, actor Dane Cook, 50, has a brother named Darryl McCauley who served as his manager for some time. In 2010, CNN reported that Darryl, along with his wife Erika, stole $12 million from the actor and comedian when they were managing his career. McCaulay was sentenced to six years in prison, plus 13 years of probation. His wife Erika, was sentenced to three years behind bars and 13 years of probation. Both were ordered to pay Dane back the amount stolen.

One of the most tragic family dramas in Hollywood is the one surrounding the Brando family. Marlon Brando had a total of 11 children, one of them named Christian, who got involved in a terrible manslaughter case where he took the life of a man named Dag Drollet, by shooting him in his father’s Hollywood Hills home in 1990. Dag was his half-sister Cheyenne’s boyfriend at the time. Christian was sentenced to prison in 1991, but was freed five years later. His trial was publicly discussed through several outlets, with Christian admitting he only wanted to scare Dag, after Cheyenne had told him that he has physically abusive towards her. Years later, in an interview with The Times, Christian said that after learning Cheyenne’s mental health was very unstable - she was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia - he felt “like a complete chump for believing her,” suggesting Dag probably was not violent. Cheyenne, Marlon and Christian died in 1995, 2004 and 2008, respectively.
