President Trump threw sweets to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a tense moment in the high-pressure meeting with the G7 leaders earlier this month, it has been reported.

As the leaders met in Canada, Trump faced intense grilling over America’s high aluminium and steel tariffs, as well as his suggestion that Russia should be reintroduced into the group.

According to Eurasia Group President Ian Bremner, Trump decided to throw starburst sweets onto the table in front of Ms Merkel after an apparent attempt to pressure him into signing a new rules-based international order.

‘Trump was sitting there with his arms crossed, clearly not liking the fact that they were ganging up on him,’ Bremmer told CBS.

‘He eventually agreed and said OK, he’ll sign it. And at that point, he stood up, put his hand in his pocket, his suit jacket pocket, and he took two Starburst candies out, threw them on the table and said to Merkel, “Here, Angela. Don’t say I never give you anything.”‘

In the wake of the meeting, Trump launched a stinging attack on Justin Trudeau – as well as refusing to sign the joint agreement agreed on by other G7 members.

The latest bizarre claim about Mr Trump’s behaviour comes in the same week that he has faced intense criticism for separating children from their parents at immigration centres in Texas.

Amid intense scrutiny, Mr Trump yesterday signed an executive order meant to end the separation of families at the border.

‘We’re going to have strong — very strong — borders, but we are going to keep the families together’, he said as he signed the order in the Oval Office.

‘I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated.’
