Donald Trump’s medical team have said he’s doing ‘very well’ in hospital after being admitted with COVID-19.

The US president’s doctors added they are “extremely happy” with his progress at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Trump revealed on Friday he and his wife Melania had tested positive for coronavirus and were going into quarantine.

His health then deteriorated and he was filmed walking to a helicopter at the White House before being taken to hospital.

“The team and I are extremely happy with the progress the president has made,” Trump’s physician Dr Sean Conley said this afternoon outside the hospital.

“He's been fever-free for 24 hours and we are cautiously optimistic.”

Dr Conley added the president no longer had a fever and was not currently on oxygen.

He said Trump was in “high spirits” and had declared this morning he felt like he could walk out the hospital today.

Dr Conley previously said Trump had received the first dose of Remdesivir, an intravenous antiviral drug that has been shown to shorten hospital stays.

He is also taking several other treatments, including a Regeneron developed polyclonal antibody cocktail and vitamin D.

UK politicians, including British prime minister Boris Johnson, have wished the president well.

Johnson, who was also hospitalised with coronavirus in March, said: “My best wishes to President Trump and the First Lady.

“Hope they both have a speedy recovery from coronavirus.”

Housing minister Robert Jenrick added: “We know what it’s like to have, in our case a prime minister who tested positive for COVID, and setting aside politics we all want to see him and his wife get better soon.”

But not everyone in the UK had positive words for Trump, with actor Dominic West saying he 'did slightly leap in the air with joy' over the coronavirus diagnosis.

Trump is at high risk because of his age and weight.

He has remained in apparent good health during his time in office but is not known to exercise regularly or to follow a healthy diet.

In a tweet late on Friday, Trump wrote: “Going well, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!”

He also released a brief video message, saying: “I think I’m doing very well, but we’re going to make sure that things work out.”

In addition to the president and his wife, at least four people who were at a White House event to announce conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination said they have tested positive.

They include White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, Republican senators Mike Lee and Thom Tillis and University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins.

Other leaders who have previously caught coronavirus include Prince Charles, Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro, EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier and Bolivia's President Jeanine Anez.
