Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has explained how his side “don’t have to sell” Liverpool target Manu Kone and will only consider doing so if an “immense offer” comes in.

The Reds have found their pursuits of midfield stars somewhat tough this summer. They’ve been outright rejected by one midfielder, as Moises Caicedo decided to join Chelsea despite Brighton accepting a £110million Liverpool bid for him.

Romeo Lavia did not quite reject the Reds, but his preference was also a move to Stamford Bridge. After that pair evaded their grasp, Liverpool signed Wataru Endo, but have maintained their push for new midfield talent.

Monchengladbach midfielder Kone has been on their list for some time. Indeed, he was reported to be one of Jurgen Klopp’s top targets at the start of the window, and after missing out on some midfielders, it was reported they “keep following” the star.

However, Monchengladbach sporting director Virkus has told Liverpool it’ll take a huge offer if they’re to let Kone go.

“We don’t have to sell him,” Virkus told Bild.

“But it was always like this: if there is another immense offer, then we have to think about it. But that’s not the plan. Our plan is to keep Kone.”

Virkus explained that the qualities the star has are ones they want to keep around.

“Kone is a player who has something different, he gives you as a team a better balance in midfield,” Virkus added.

“He’s coming back after the international break and he’s very important to us, a tough and intelligent footballer. We need stability in this position.”

While those are qualities that Liverpool might well like to call upon, after signing Endo, splashing a big sum on a midfielder seems unlikely. That’s not to say they won’t sign a midfielder at all – they’re still two down from last season after Endo came in.

What’s more, it was unexpected when they bid £110million for Caicedo, so offering a large sum to take Kone onboard is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Even then, though, Virkus did not say it would be accepted, just that it would be considered, so they might still be out of luck anyway.
