Doechii’s 2025 Grammy Cornrows Were an Ode to Black Beauty
Throughout her album, Doechii refers to herself by many names: Doechii the Don, Little Miss Stanka Pooh, the Swamp Ruler, and so on. However, at the 2025 Grammy Awards, she proved that she is truly a standout in fashion and beauty, adding another title to her growing list: The Queen of Camp, if you will. She donned a series of expertly tailored Thom Browne designs throughout the night, including extra-wide structured pants to accept her Grammy for Best Rap Album, all accentuated by the highlight of the ensemble—her signature artistic cornrows.
For the 2025 Grammys, Doechii wanted to swap between different sculptural headpieces that elevated the classic braided style. “When planning our Grammy looks, it was important to us that we told a story throughout the night,” said celebrity hairstylist Malcolm Marquez. “We decided an evolutionary braid story would be the best fit with her current era and project.”
The duo was inspired by classic finger wave styles and worked together to bring them to life in an innovative and modern way. To style Doechii’s hair, Marquez started by prepping her braids using the Thank God It’s Natural Miracle Styling Ayurvedic Hair & Scalp Oil to keep her scalp balanced between looks. Then he prepped her finger waves using the Miracle Styling Multi-Use Setting Foam, followed by the Miracle Styling Water Activated Curl Elongating Gel, and finished with the Miracle Styling 3-N-1 Heat Protectant Spray to add extra shine to the braids and waves.
For the headpieces that sat atop the cornrows, Marquez used a millinery hat as a base and added wire to the braids to create structure before shaping it into an abstract 3D design that mimicked the shape of cornrows. The braids were then hand-sewn to the headpiece.
Marquez had been meticulously planting seeds of Doechii’s budding signature image for some time, working collaboratively with the Swamp Princess to narrow in on one cohesive idea. He is even the mastermind behind the connected braids the rapper and her dancers wore on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. So, it’s only fitting that for her latest jaw-dropping performance—even Billie Eilish’s astonished look following the performance became a meme—Marques added yet another intricate style to Doechii’s beauty hall of fame. “Doechii and I have a very collaborative process,” says Marquez. “Sometimes, I have the main idea that she edits, and sometimes, she has an outline of her vision for me to enhance. Either way, we are always working together on her looks, and it’s always important for us to work with Black-owned brands to execute these looks.”
Black culture has always been at the cornerstone Doechii’s work, whether she’s rapping about her Tampa roots or inspiring hope in Black women across the world—and her beauty approach is no different. It is intentional, raw, and completely unique, all words that describe Doechii herself. “Doechii and I both understand the power and cultural impact a hairstyle can have,” says Marquez. “Every look we create together has Black history and futures in mind. "On one of the most important nights of our careers, I felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with TGIN, a Black-owned and -founded haircare brand that aims to support, unify, and empower Black women.”
Last night, Doechii made Grammy history as the third woman to ever win the Best Rap Album category. With cornrows proudly styled on music’s biggest stage, she dedicated her victory to young Black women who see themselves in her—an artist fearlessly embracing her truth, proving that Black voices, stories, and presence are worthy of celebration.
