Marble prints are everywhere right now and are bang on-trend. Stores are selling everything from marble-effect homeware, to stationery and even bedding. Picking up things like marble print mugs or trinket dishes in places such as Oliver Bonas and Anthropologie can be expensive; but it is possible to cheaply and easily make your own.

All you’ll need is:

  • some affordable plain mugs (these are 50p from Ikea)

  • nail varnish

  • masking tape or Sellotape

  • water

  • a plastic tub that you can throw away when you are finished

Step 1: Tape off your design area

First you need to mark off the section of the mug that you want to ‘marble’ with your tape. I chose to do just the bottom section of my mugs, but you could tape off a diagonal section or even do the whole mug. Using tape will ensure you get a clean and neat edge to your marbled section.

Step 2: Add nail varnish to plastic tube

Next, add water to your throw-away bowl or tub. Judge how much depending on how far you are dipping your mug in – you don’t want it to overflow. You then need to pour and swirl your chosen nail varnish from the bottle onto the surface of the water.

Step 3: Dip your mug

Quickly (before all the nail varnish in the water runs together) dip in your mug up to your tape line and then lay it down to dry.

Step 4: Peel off tape

After around 20 minutes, when your mug is dry, peel off the tape and marvel at your creation. If you’d like to clean your mug, make sure to hand-wash rather than put in the dishwasher.

You mug is ready to be used! You can drink out of your new marble mugs or use them as a makeup brush holder or pencil pot.

Have a think about other white ceramics that you could do this technique with too – the possibilities are endless.
