Disney has released the first trailer for Cruella de Vil's origin story Cruella - with Emma Stone resplendent as the notorious puppy-hating villain in her youth.

The Oscar winner stars as Cruella in the new live action film about the character's early days. It's set in 1970s London and is a prequel to 1996's 101 Dalmatians and the sequel 102 Dalmatians, in 2000.

The trailer for the film, which is released in May, begins with a dramatic voiceover from Cruella over footage of her early life.

"From the very beginning I realised I saw the world differently from everyone else," she says. "That didn't sit well with some people. But I wasn't for everyone. But I guess they were always scared I'd be a psycho."

We see her at a glamorous ball, being snarled at by some Dalmatians, showing off a spectacular costume change and leaving destruction in her wake.

"The thing is - I was born brilliant, born bad and a little bit mad," she says. "I'm Cruella."

The film follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.

One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend (played by the iconic Dame Emma Thompson). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
