Disney to lay off about 32,000 workers
The major impact of coronavirus on both the travel and entertainment industries was spelled out by Walt Disney co. on Wednesday (November 26).
The U.S. company announced it would lay-off up to 32,000 workers.
Most of the jobs will go at theme parks, which have seen much fewer customers this year.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Disney said the layoffs will be in the first half of 2021.
The job losses have increased from September, when the company said it would let go of 28,000 workers.
Earlier this month, Disney announced it would furlough more employees from its theme park in Southern California.
It blamed uncertainty over when the state would allow parks to reopen.
Its theme parks in Florida and outside the U.S. reopened earlier this year with strict social distancing, masks and testing.
Disneyland Paris was forced to close again late last month when France imposed a new lockdown.
The company's theme parks in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo remain open.
