The Director Of Michael Fassbender's New Thriller Thinks He Knows Why It Got Panned

From Esquire UK

On the surface, Michael Fassbender playing a hard-boiled and strung-out detective in a Scandi noir directed by the man behind Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy had the hallmarks of a classic.

In reality, well, The Snowman didn't quite go to plan. And between that and Assassin's Creedanother terrible big budget film at the start of the year, the name of which makes us shudder to utter, Fassbender's not had a great year.

Unless, of course, you count marrying Alicia Vikander, and you should.

Anyway, speaking to Norwegian press, The Snowman's director Tomas Alfredson has offered his two cents on what went wrong, and it seems to come down to a rushed production.

"Our shoot time in Norway was way too short," the director said. "We didn't get the whole story with us and when we started cutting we discovered that a lot was missing. It's like when you're making a big jigsaw puzzle and a few pieces are missing so you don't see the whole picture."

He also explained production was rushed: "It happened very abruptly - suddenly we got notice that we had the money and could start the shoot in London."

However, he wasn't entirely regretful. Addressing claims that he hadn't properly represented the geography of Norway (one of our main gripes, if we're being really honest), the director had this to say:

"It's not a documentary about the geography of Norway. I wanted to make a fictive thriller. So even if not everything is geographically correct, I don't give a s-."

Perhaps now we can all put this film behind us, right? In the meantime, here's a reminder of exactly why Fassbender is one of the best actors of his generation. No snowmen included.
