Washing your locks can be a time-consuming task but it is essential for hair health - now a dermatologist has weighed in on how often we should be scrubbing our locks.

Many of us probably hop in the shower and wash our hair without thinking twice - it can often be an effort to not wet your hair so you may as well gift a scrub while you're there. But for those with long locks it can be a long - and ardours task that you may put off for as long as possible until your hair looks unacceptably greasy. So how long can we wait?

Skin doctor, Adel, who specialises in skin and hair loss, shared her expertise. "This question comes up time and time again. I'm a dermatologist and specialise in hair. How often should you be washing your hair?"

She pointed out everyone's scalp and hair is different so hair washing is actually a lot different for each individual. "Just because your bestie is washing their hair every seven days, doesn't mean you should too," she added.

Breaking down what works for different hair types, Adel said: "If you are somebody who has oily, greasy hair, flaky hair, you use lots of hair care products, you work out a lot, you should wash your hair every day."

However if you have textured hair, a very dry scalp, or very dry hair, then you should wash your hair every few days. But if you have very tight, oily, textured hair, you can get away with washing your hair once a week. "Or maybe even longer," Adel said.

"The important learning point here is that hair washing is different for every person," Adel added. "There's no easy answer when it comes to hair washing and it varies between person to person, but I hope this general guide helps."

People rushed to comment on the video, as one individual said: "My greasy a** hair could never wait seven days."

Another shared how often they wash their hair, adding: "I wash mine every second day or sometimes everyday because I have an oily scalp. Hair masks and leave ins save the ends."

One other wrote: "Yes I'm mad I spent years of people telling me to not wash my hair as much because that was making it oily. Like no. I have fine, oily hair, and I wash it once every other day if not every day. My sister can actually go for a week if she wanted and it would still look like new. Some people got blessed and some people didn't."

Another who washes their hair frequently, commented: "Everyday for me… after I’ve done my chores cleaned bins out gyms etc how can you not. At least every other day otherwise it feels grubby."
