There are two types of people in this world – those who brush their teeth before breakfast, and those who brush them after. But it turns out half of us have been doing it wrong all our lives, as one dentist took to TikTok to finally put an end to the whole before vs after debate.

In a now-viral video, dentist Anna Peterson revealed to her 79.4 thousand followers that the best time to brush your teeth is... *dramatic drum roll* before breakfast.

But, why?

In her clip, Anna explains that it's all to do with the acidity that builds up in our mouths once we've eaten. "Did you know you shouldn't brush your teeth after breakfast, always before?" she said, "What you're doing when you brush your teeth after breakfast is brushing the acid into the tooth. And this wears away the enamel."

According to Anna, that's not the only benefit of brushing your teeth before your first meal of the day. "Brushing before breakfast protects your teeth from anything you're going to eat," she added.

Naturally, teeth-brushers across the world took to the comments section to give their opinion on the topic. "I've always told people this but seemed like I was the only one," said one TikTok user, while another said "As a dental nurse it's amazing how many people have never realised that this is the better way of doing it."

Someone else wrote "You learn something new every day," with another TikToker saying "I've been doing life wrong this whole time???!"

Although most viewers were happy to give their morning routine a refresh, others decided they'd rather stick with brushing after breakfast. Luckily, there's a solution for that too. One TikToker commented, "Good advice. I brush after but wait 20 minutes for the acid to neutralise." And it seems that method has Anna's seal of approval too, as she replied "Yes, waiting 30 minutes and then brushing would be fine to do."

But, it's not the first time we've all learnt something new from a scroll on TikTok. Earlier this year another dentist went viral on the app after saying that the majority of us are using mouthwash wrong. How so? Well, apparently it's better to use mouthwash before cleaning your teeth, not after.

The more you know, eh?
