After dark! What really went on at the Fashion Awards 2022?

‘Just call me Undulation for the night’, Paloma Faith told us, looking up from underneath her bowl-cut 70s wig at the annual extravaganza that was the Fashion Awards 2022 (FKA the British Fashion Awards) fuelled by Diet Coke and Moët & Chandon.

‘You what?’ we replied, ‘My dress… It’s very undulating, isn’t it Julia?’ She asked of London legend Princess Julia who was sitting with us, giving us all a twirl in her Iris Van Herpen chiffon and tulle frock. ‘Yeah, it’s what [Van Herpen] does’ Julia explained. Right-o, then. Glad we cleared that up.

The top score of the night was to get a selfie with Tilda Swinton who literally everyone - designer, muse, model, civilian, gay, straight, and undefined - was fawning after. Show host Jodie Turner-Smith even suggested Swinton should run as our next Prime Minister given that the role seems to open up every eight weeks, she quipped.

Not a bad shout, we could do with a bit more Tilda in our lives to be honest. Swinton responded when she took to the stage to present Jefferson Hack with the Special Recognition Award for Cultural Curation: ‘You should all move to Scotland!’

Elsewhere, Burna Boy forgot his glasses so had to get Stormzy up on stage to help him read the autocue; we caught one naughty stylist and designer trying to have a cheeky fag in the loos and Katie Grand received the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator. We even saw one poor Japanese editor become fashion roadkill in the corridor and trampled under the blancmange dress of a euro blogger, her heel getting caught in the tulle and then hitting the floor with an almighty bang (she was alright, we stayed to check).

The nearest we got to a selfie with Swinton? About a table away. ‘Shout her over - you know her!’ DJ Jodie Harsh urged Princess Julia, ‘I can’t’ Julia replied, ‘she’s about to sit down and have her tea.’ So, alas without a selfie you’ll have to make do with this playlist from Harsh and DJ Fat Tony, who took to the stage and played B2B to close the night instead:
