Darius Campbell Danesh passed away last month at the age of 41, due to “inhalation of chloroethane”, it has been announced.

The Scottish musician found fame in the 2000s on reality television show Pop Idol while competing against Gareth Gates and Will Young. He was found dead in his apartment in Minnesota on 11 August and the news of his passing was announced on 16 August.

Now, just under a month after his death, the southern Minnesota regional medical examiner’s office has explained that the musician passed away from “inhalation of chloroethane” and autopsy documents obtained by press agency PA state that the “toxic effects of chloroethane” as well as “suffocation” contributed to the musician's death.

His death has been ruled as an accident by the medical examiner assigned to the case and a previous statement from his family explained that: "The local police department have confirmed that there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances."

The musician's passing last month was met with an outpouring of grief on social media, with close friend Gerard Butler posting a lengthy tribute on Instagram, which spoke of the Scottish singer's "infectious laugh" and "barely containable zest for life".

Will Young, who knew Darius from their time together on Pop Idol, paid his respects by sharing a throwback picture of them together on his Twitter. In the accompanying caption, he wrote that; "For the past few days my thoughts have been with Darius's family and will continue to be so."

Another Pop Idol alum to speak about Darius's passing was Gareth Gates, who took to Instagram to share a picture of him and Darius and pen a heartfelt caption. Gareth wrote that Darius was "like a big brother" and shared that he was "heartbroken" about the news.

Our thoughts continue to be with Darius's family and friends, and all those who knew him, during this difficult time.
