Forget those perfect Disney princesses, stay ahead of the beauty curve this season and embrace your inner villainess.
It’s time to grab your boldest red lipstick and celebrate Emma Stone’s performance as the iconic hellraiser in new Disney live-action movie Cruella - you won’t need to snatch any Dalmatians, simply master a punchy crimson pout and smoulderingly devilish eye.
Luckily, we have Carly Utting, a National Artist from M·A·C Cosmetics, to talk us through the audacious trend.
“Cruella would’ve been a M·A·C girl in another life, she’s a rule-breaker, an original and a trendsetter, just what M·A·C set out to do 37 years ago,” Carly told Cover Media. “You may be thinking ‘What are the rules for wearing a strong eye and lip together?’ Good news, this is make-up, there are NO rules. It’s all down to your own style and pushing it to a level you feel comfortable with.”
A smoking red lipstick to capture Cruella’s scowl is essential.
M·A·C recently released The Disney Cruella Collection which boasts plenty of punk rock reds with themed names such as De Vil In The Detail, or retro matte options like Mayhemmed.
“For me, replicating Cruella’s vampy signature look would consist of creating a sharp and impactful tomato red lip using Mayhemmed Retro Matte Lipstick from the collection,” Carly said. “I also love to alter the shape of my lips using Cherry Lip Pencil so I would slightly heighten my Cupid’s bow for that fierce Cruella lip.”
If you prefer a crayon over a lipstick, we love Honest Beauty’s Lip Crayon-Demi Matte in Strawberry for a bright burst of colour.
Smokey and smudged works best, no need for neat lines – Cruella certainly wouldn’t approve. Experiment with an eye pencil to create the lived-in look.
“I recommend pairing your red lip with a smudge of black kohl using the Pro Longwear Dual-Ended Liner in the black along the lash line to define rather than transform, but then again, who said you can’t do both?” Carly asked.
Dramatic mascara is a must, so choose something like the Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer or Kevyn Aucoin’s The Volume Mascara to get the full falsie effect.
To achieve the smokey eye look favoured by Cruella, you’ll need to incorporate contrasting layers of black, brown, or plum with silver and white.
Our top tip is to blend as much as possible!
Run a crease brush along your lids to combine the eyeshadow shades and gently smudge under your eyes for added attitude. Fenty Beauty Snap Shadows palette offers some stunning smokey shades for this look.
And finally, apply foundation or tinted moisturiser to ensure a flawless complexion, then add a hint of blush to the apples of your cheeks – but keep it subtle, Cruella was never into contouring!
Finish with a highlighter like Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Powder to ensure the spotlight remains firmly on you, and repeat after Cruella: “From the beginning, I was ready to make a statement…”
