Daniel Lee has been appointed chief creative officer at Burberry, replacing Riccardo Tisci, who has been at the helm of the brand since March 2018. The news – which has been confirmed by the house – may come as a shock to many in the industry with Tisci presenting the brand's spring/summer 2023 collection for the house just a few days ago.

Lee – who most recently found huge commercial success heading up Bottega Veneta – will be responsible for all Burberry collections, and will present his debut collection at London Fashion Week in February 2023.

"Daniel is an exceptional talent with a unique understanding of today’s luxury consumer and a strong record of commercial success, and his appointment reinforces the ambitions we have for Burberry," the company's CEO Jonathan Akeroyd told WWD. "I am excited about working closely with him and I am confident he will have the impact we are aiming for in this next phase, supported by our talented and experienced teams."

The British designer also released a statement where he emphasised his excitement for this new chapter for the house, adding that he will continue Tisci's legacy, while he also stressed his excitement for returning to London.

Lee will no doubt be a great asset to Burberry with the designer being credited with enormous success during his time at Bottega.

Among his success, Lee picked up four accolades at the 2019 Fashion Awards, including Designer of the Year and Brand of the Year. He had succeeded Tomas Maier, who had helmed Bottega for 17 years. While the brand was in a solid position as a respected Italian fashion house with impressive heritage and strong sales within the leather goods market, Lee transformed it into an ‘It’ label at the forefront of fashion – Bottega Veneta’s show became one of the most highly anticipated on the calendar, several of Lee’s designs developed cult-like status (the Pouch bag, the Padded sandals), and there are swarms of fans (more than 874,000) following an Instagram account devoted to this fresh look, entitled ‘New Bottega’.

Prior to his time at Bottega Veneta, Lee worked under Phoebe Philo at Céline, and at Donna Karan.
