Daniel Craig Says Those Calling for a Female Bond Are Asking the Wrong Question

It's a debate that might as well be old as time itself, at this point. Now that Daniel Craig has already said his goodbyes to the cast and crew of No Time to Die, his final outing as James Bond, the (likely) billion-dollar-some question is burning: Who will play the next 007?

Of course, the cases have been made for stars such as Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and our forever duke, Regé-Jean Page. But there have been camps of Bond devotees on the Internet saying that the next 007 ought to be a woman, which is something the producers behind the franchise have already shot down. (Don't forget, though, that Lashana Lynch will take up the mantle of 007 in No Time to Die. How will be revealed on October 8th, when the film finally releases.) While the debate has raged on, we hadn't heard one vital opinion: That of Daniel Crag. Now, in an interview with Radio Times, the actor finally weighed in.

“The answer to that is very simple,” Craig said. “There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

Craig has an interesting argument here. There have been several female-led action movies that had the potential to take off and expand into subsequent films in the past few years: We've seen Atomic Blonde, Gunpowder Milkshake, revivals for Tomb Raider and Charlie's Angels, all debut to varying levels of success. Of course, you could name a film like Kill Bill as an iconic film with a leading female part that, hey, might just be better than good ol' James.

Craig himself has beefed up roles for women in the production of No Time to Die, adding the great Phoebe Waller-Bridge to its writing crew with that aim expressly in mind. But he has a point: Would anyone have a problem with the next great original action blockbuster series being led by Waller-Bridge herself? Certainly not us.
