After months of assumption and unspoken acceptance, we've finally got confirmation that Daniel Craig won't be making any more James Bond films after No Time To Die.

It had long been assumed that the 25th Bond film would be Craig's last rodeo, especially after a deeply charming farewell speech at the wrap party last month, but this is the first time he's said it out loud in the vicinity of a journalist's dictaphone.

The German site Express asked him straight if he was finished with Bond now, and Craig told them: "Yes – someone else needs to have a go."

No, it's not much of a surprise. Yes, it feels like the natural end of the cycle. But it's still a little bit galling to see it there in black and white.

So what's next for Craig? He's not sure. (You'll have to pardon the slightly clunky translation here. It makes Craig sound a bit like he's been kicked in the head by a horse.)

"I'm in the happy situation, where I'm sent many scripts and offers me quite different roles," Craig said. "My only plan is to work with good and nice people."

Directing apparently doesn't appeal too much. "For God's sake, no!" Craig said. "I want to come home, eat something and then go to bed. If you're a director, then at night you're still with the producers, screenwriters, and what do I know on the phone. And then after two hours of sleep, you have to go back up to the set. No thanks!"

Absolutely fair enough.
