Dancing on Ice newcomer Matt Richardson has given fans an update on his skating training, after it was announced that he would be replacing Golden Ticket winner Rufus Hound.

ITV confirmed that Rufus and his professional partner Robin Johnstone would be leaving the show immediately after receiving a positive coronavirus test result on February 3, just hours after the show announced new COVID-19 protocols.

"Following the guidance on isolation, a positive COVID-19 diagnosis for any of our cast at this stage would mean two weeks missed and sadly an end to their time on the show," the series confirmed in a statement.

"It has always been the case that no celebrity skater has missed more than one public vote."

Now, as he prepares to make his debut on the ice, comedian and presenter Matt – who will skate alongside professional Vicky Ogden – has given fans a sneak peek at his progress on Instagram.

"Is that... is that Christopher Dean?" he wrote alongside a video of his best Bambi impression. "No, just me guys being so amazing.

"This is good enough to be on the show in 3 days, right?"

Meanwhile, Rufus has addressed his early departure from the series on social media, calling COVID "a bastard". In a separate statement uploaded to YouTube, the comedian also paid tribute to his professional partner, as he admitted the circumstances "suck".

"It sucks because I got to spend a big chunk of the last six months with Robin Johnstone, who has been a tremendous pal throughout all of this, a brilliant ice dance teacher, and human sunshine," he said.

"In her, I found somebody who was ready for all sorts of mad ideas about things we could do."

Dancing on Ice continues Sunday, February 7 at 6pm on ITV.
