Dancing on Ice judges and skating icons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have opened up on the likelihood of them hanging up their skates in the near future.

Speaking to The Mirror, the Olympic gold-winning duo reflected on the need to cherish each performance they do now as they know they won't be able to skate forever.

Dean explained: "Each performance is getting closer to the final one and that's why we're appreciating what we're doing now.

"When you're younger, you don't think it's going to end and then, when you get to the twilight of things, you begin to realise 'You know what, this has been good to us, it's our old friend' and you've got to treat it with respect."

As Torvill and Dean are 63 and 62 respectively, when asked if they would still be performing in their 70s, the latter jokingly replied "Shoot us if we are," before adding: "On the ice, I'm not as fast, I can feel that. So we have to be as creative as we can from a movement point of view to make up for it."

Torvill agreed, stating: "I don't know when we'll call it a day. We tried to retire in the 90s then Dancing on Ice popped up and suddenly we found ourselves performing again. And while we still love it, and can do it to a level we're happy with, we'll keep on. But I don't know about when I'm 77."

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the pair are not able to skate live on this series of Dancing on Ice as they have not formed a social bubble.

Torvill revealed: "We've pre-recorded our routines for the series because we won't be allowed to touch each other. It's quite strange but we've got to keep safe and keep everyone else safe."

Dancing on Ice continues on Saturday, February 13th, at 6pm on ITV.
