Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman's partner of 13 years has died.
Dame Maureen, who had been with partner Guido Castro since 2008, was with him when he passed away on Thursday (27 January). He died following a short covid-related illness.
"He got covid – it wasn't covid that killed him but it weakened him terribly," Maureen explained of the 84-year-old.
Mr Castro had been in a respite home, and had tested positive for coronavirus just days after getting his vaccine.
"We don't know how he got it or when or if he had it when he got the vaccine," she shared.
"I said to Guido, 'It's time to go. You've got to let go'. And I think for once in his life he actually did what I told him."
Dame Maureen and Guido had been unable to self isolate together because of underlying health conditions.
Speaking to Prima magazine last year, Maureen spoke of her love for Guido: "He’s a lovely man. I haven’t always been the best wife, mother or lover – I think I’m a bit hit and miss – but I recognise a good man when I see him.
"He’s different to the sort of person I thought I’d be with. He’s from Egypt and he’s a bit like an upper class Englishman from the 1950s! We’re very opposite; he loves to travel and I love to stay at home. He grew up in a house on the Nile and I come from Hull. But somehow, it just works."
