Dakota Johnson Discusses Difficulty Undressing On Set, After 'The Lost Daughter' Release
Dakota Johnson starred in this year's highly acclaimed psychological drama The Lost Daughter, in which she plays young mum Nina who, throughout the film, is often seen in swimwear, due to continuous beach scenes.
And we can't forget her role as Anastasia Steele in steamy romantic Fifty Shades trilogy, of which she famously stars alongside Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey.
On camera, and off, Johnson oozes confidence. However, the ELLE UK cover star wasn't afraid to admit that when it comes to getting undressed on set, she finds it 'difficult'.
The 32-year-old, who just last month opened up about her complicated feeling towards motherhood in the wake of her recent movie, has now addressed a different issue.
She told W magazine: 'Some days, I don't want to take off my clothes on set.'
She added: 'Just because I look a certain way doesn't mean I don't have feelings.'
Specifically referring to her on-screen character Nina, who alongside The Crown's Olivia Colman helps to portray the ups and downs of motherhood, she explained: 'My character, Nina, is almost bored by her appearance.
'She has reached a point in her life where her hotness doesn't match who she is anymore.'
Johnson, who worked with Jessica Alba and Halle Berry's personal trainer Ramona Braganza for her role as Steele, previously spoke about refusing to use a body double for Fifty Shades Darker, the second movie in the erotic trilogy.
In 2017, the year the film was released, The How To Be Single actor, who said using a body double 'would have felt like a cop-out', told The Mirror: 'If I was going to do this job, I was going to do it 100 per cent and give it everything. I wanted to be true and honest to the role, and the character. I don’t have a problem with nudity. I think it is beautiful and so I was OK with that.'
As for the sex scenes, Johnson, who's in a relationship with musician Chris Martin, said: 'It’s always a bit daunting at first. It takes hours and you really have to dissect it and break it down into bits. Then it just becomes work and you’re not really thinking about what’s going on.'
She elaborated on her relationship with her body, saying: 'I was brought up to respect myself and be comfortable and confident. I always admired that in other women, I always was attracted to those who were not ever worrying about what other people think. I was also brought up in an environment where it’s more important to be interesting than pretty.'
In her interview with W, Johnson also admitted to understanding why her parents, actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith 'discouraged' her from her Hollywood dreams, saying: 'They wanted me to have as much of a childhood as I could.'
When discussing complex feelings surrounding motherhood in an interview with The Times, she said: 'For somebody like me, who isn’t yet a mother and maybe doesn’t want to be a mother, it makes that okay. Complicated, but okay.
She continued: 'It would also be cool if Cambridge [university] offered to freeze eggs.
'With technology, you can have a biological child until you’re 50. That’s cool.'
And in her interview with ELLE UK, she explained: 'I had a lot of life really young, so I think I feel older.'
Her self-awareness seemingly reflects this.
