Daisy May Cooper reveals how she lost jaw-dropping 10 stone in 3 years
Actress Daisy May Cooper has revealed her jaw-dropping 10-stone – or 63.5kg – weight loss over a period of around three years.
The BAFTA-winning 38 year old from Gloucestershire, who is best known for creating, writing and starring as Kerry Mucklowe in TV comedy This Country, shared that her transformation happened between filming series one and two of BBC One comedy show Am I Being Unreasonable? from 2021 to October 2024. She said it was seeing her old self that drove home the desire to change her appearance.
Speaking to Daily Mail (via Grazia), she revealed: ‘I’m so for body positivity, but when I was at my biggest, I was at my most miserable and I had a massive food addiction. I wasn’t healthy. I couldn’t breathe when I was walking up the stairs. I was so unhappy.'
Diet and medication changes
Daisy began her transformation with the keto diet, which focuses on low-carb, high-fat meals, after the first 2020 and 2021 Covid lockdowns. But it wasn't just pasta that was off the menu; the actor also gave up alcohol.
When The Sunday Times asked her to share the 'best advice given', Daisy shared that she'd received advice 'from Denise Welch, who said stopping drinking is life-changing.'
In an appearance on the BBC podcast How to Be in the Spotlight in June, the mother of three also noted that treatment for her mental health had contributed to her increase in size.
'I was put on some medication for depression, Quetiapine. It slows your metabolism right down to a crawl and it makes you have the munchies 24/7. I was put on it just before I started This Country. What people weren't aware of is I'd always been a size 8 to 10. It was that medication that made me balloon.'
There was a marked difference when she stopped her prescription. 'It wasn't until I made the decision to come off that that people were like, "Oh my God, she's so different and she's losing all this weight". This was always who I was, so shedding all of that was great.'
She also made it clear to listeners that she'd avoided more drastic procedures: 'I haven't had any surgery. I did go in to have a consultation for a tummy tuck and the surgeon just scared the s*** out of me.'
How her transformation has been received
She was 'shocked' by the difference aesthetically between her appearance in the first season of Am I Being Unreasonable? and the second, citing cosmetic procedures and weight loss. 'It was a bit mad as since we filmed the last series and this series, I’ve had my lips done and lost about ten stone,' she reflected. 'So in those flashbacks, we were just killing ourselves laughing as we don’t even look like the same people. But it was fun.'
However, she's received backlash from fans since the change in her appearance. 'I’ve had some messages like, “Well, now you’ve lost the weight you’re not funny any more.” What the f**k? Why do women have to be f**king fat to be funny?
'That makes me so angry. I champion anybody. I think everybody should be happy with their body. But I wasn't.'
Season two of Am I Being Unreasonable? airs tonight on BBC One.
