Outbacksmen never die – they come back in meta-comedies.

To prove it, here we have the very first look at The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, with Paul Hogan (sort of) reprising his role as Mick Dundee.

In fact, Hogan is playing a fictionalised version of himself in the movie, directed by frequent collaborator Dean Murphy.

Per the official synopsis: “Paul Hogan is reluctantly thrust back into the spotlight as he desperately attempts to restore his sullied reputation on the eve of being knighted.”

What Paul has done to sully his reputation will likely be revealed in the movie' first trailer, likely to drop soon.

Hogan is joined by a host of other stars, who are also playing versions of themselves; Grease legend Olivia Newton-John is Olivia, Chevy Chase as Chevy, John Cleese as John and Jurassic Park's Wayne Knight as Wayne.

Other stars appear as 'themselves', including comedian Jim Jeffries and Luke Hemsworth.

The vibe appears to be in the vein of Jean-Claude Van Damme's JCVD, in which the Muscles from Brussels lampooned himself back in 2008.

Hogan played the outback legend Mick Dundee in 1986, winning himself an Oscar nomination for his screenplay.

Two sequels followed, 1988's Crocodile Dundee II and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, the latter, made more than a decade after Croc II, tanking at the box office.

Hopes were high back in 2018 that a new Crocodile Dundee movie, with Danny McBride playing the long lost son of Mick, was in the offing.

However, it turned out merely to be an advert for the Australian Tourist Board.

The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee was originally poised for release last year, and is still awaiting a firm release date.
