Food is taken seriously in Courmayeur, and eating is the prime alternative occupation to hitting the slopes. The resort prides itself on its gastronomy and restaurants punch above their weight when it comes to classy dining. What’s more the main lift from the village runs to Plan Chécrouit until midnight, allowing foodies to spend the evening in a choice of mountain restaurants.  In March 2019 Michelin-starred British chef Tom Kerridge will be at the resort’s annual Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience for the first time.

Located in the Hotel Royal e Golf, The Petit Royal seats just 24 people, so it is essential to book in advance. Run by chef Paolo Griffa, it offers tastings of local specialities and all ingredients come from local farms.

Refugio Christiania

Up at Plan Chécrouit, Refugio Christiania (0039 335 542 2389) has been serving simple, succulent low-cost cuisine since it first opened in 1957. It's known for its original take on pizza – such as mini deep-fried pizzas filled with local cheese, ham and spinach – and is open for both lunch and dinner.

Maison Vieille

In a cosy old shepherd’s hut, and run by the ever-cheerful Giacomo Calosi, Maison Vieille is open for both lunch and dinner thanks to the extended cable car hours up from the village. At lunchtime it's reached via a nursery slope chairlift and at night guests are collected from Plan Chécrouit and dropped back there by the restaurant's snowmobile. The traditional food is magnificent.

Chiecco
It's easy to spend an entire afternoon enjoying the delights at Chiecco

Chiecco

To the side of the draglift of the same name and run by Paolo and Anna Costa, Chiecco serves typical dishes including ravioli stuffed with ricotta and herbs, tuna filet with lime and ginger, or ragù of wild boar with polenta. It's all too easy to while away the entire afternoon here.
