Coronavirus: The 15 major COVID-19 developments on Monday

Deaths: Six more people who tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland have died, taking the nation’s total to 47. A further 14 died in Wales, taking its total to 62. Northern Ireland had one more death, reaching a total of 22. Another 159 people have died in England, taking the total there to 1,284. The UK total is 1,415. Read more here.

There are questions over the accuracy of the UK death toll, because of a time lag in reporting figures. It has also emerged that deaths being counted are only those which happen in hospitals. Read more here.

Politics: The Government will work with commercial airlines to help stranded Britons get home, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has announced. The Foreign Office has set aside £75 million to charter flights to get those stuck abroad home from areas where commercial routes are no longer running.

Dominic Cummings, the prime minister’s top adviser, has become the lates political figure to have to self-isolate after showing symptoms of coronavirus. Cummings will stay in contact with his Downing St team during the isolation period. It comes after Boris Johnson started self-isolating on Friday, after testing positive for COVID-19. Sport: The Olympic Games in Tokyo have been rearranged for 23 July to 8 August, 2021, the International Olympic Committee has confirmed. The Paralympic Games will be held 24 August to 5 September, 2021. Read more here.

NHS: Pictures show the army and building contractors working to construct the 4,000-bed Nightingale hospital in the ExCel centre in London. Usually the location for events like Comic Con, the east London venue will be transformed to help treat coronavirus patients. It comes as Nicola Sturgeon says the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) will also be a field hospital, and in South Wales, parc y Scarlets is converted. Read more here.

NHS workers are hiding masks and calling in sick because of fears over equipment shortages in the battle against coronavirus, doctors have claimed. The news comes as the head of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) revealed that one in four NHS doctors are off work sick or in isolation. Read more here.

Crime: A hospital worker suffered a fractured cheekbone after being punched in the face in Salford on Sunday. A 27-year-old man has been charged with assault in connection with the alleged attack on the 50-year-old staff member, who needed treatment but has been discharged. Read more here.

Police will be forced to ignore certain crimes as the coronavirus causes officer shortages, it has been reported. As police numbers drop because of the spread of the virus, forces will halt some investigations. It comes as police have used emergency powers to clamp down on those who ignore social distancing guidelines. Read more here.

Royals: Prince Charles is confirmed to be out of self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19. His wife Camilla will remain in quarantine for another seven day to reach the recommended 14 days. Read more here.

Social distancing: A family who became infected with coronavirus after attending the funeral of a COVID-19 victim have urged the public to take social distancing measures seriously after losing another relative to the disease. Sheila Brooks, 86, died in February and her extended family attended her funeral a fortnight ago, before stringent movement restrictions were put in place in Britain. Read more here.

Positive news: Two paramedics working to battle the coronavirus crisis had their shopping paid for by a stranger in a supermarket on Sunday. People queued up at the Sainsbury’s in Loughton, Essex to pay for their food after seeing them browsing the shelves. Read more here.

The coronavirus epidemic in the UK appears to be starting to slow down, a leading UK scientist has said, with the number of new hospital admissions appearing to be reducing. Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, said the slowing of the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, was the result of the social distancing measures brought in by the government.
