Coronation Street's Simon Barlow star announces very different career away from the soap

Simon Barlow is set to exit the cobbles in upcoming emotional scenes, where the character waves goodbye to Weatherfield and sets off to live with his dad, Peter. And Alex Bain, who has played Simon on Coronation Street for 16 years, has already wrapped up filming.

Now that he has finished up, the 22-year-old actor is focusing on his studies and his true passion, dancing. Sharing insight into his career off-screen this week, Alex admitted that his goal is to own a dance studio

"I will always be a dancer and one day I would love to be a choreographer and teach dance and ultimately open my own dance and performance school," he told Radio Times, sharing that he has been able to take a 'full week of classes' for the first time in years.

Alex continued: "I am currently finally taking my ballet and modern intermediate exams that I should have done when I was 16. I need those qualifications to have a chance of teaching and doing choreography."

While he may have a focus on dancing, Alex shared that acting is still on the horizon too, adding: "Acting goes hand in hand with dancing though so hopefully I will be able to continue to do both."

Alex first announced he was leaving in December 2023, with the actor keen to leave behind his soap roots and pursue other opportunities. A source told The Sun at the time: "Alex is sad to be leaving Coronation Street because it really is like a family - but he realises that the time is right to move on."

Joining the show in 2008, Alex was just seven years old when he took on the role of Simon. Alex's departure follow's from his on-screen father Chris Gascoyne, who recently left the show after 23 years of playing Peter Barlow. He made a heartbreaking exit from the Cobbles at the end of last year after killing Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), with Peter's departure also potentially serving as the catalyst for Simon's exit.

Despite Alex's delight to be able to focus on dancing and appearing on board with the exit, reports have more recently emerged that the actor was keen to stay on the show. "Alex has been putting on a brave face saying he quit the show but in reality bosses decided it was time for him to move on," a source told The Sun.

They added: "It's been incredibly emotional for Alex and he really doesn't want to leave at all. He's been begging bosses to keep him in mind for the future. He wants to go back already."
