Coronation Street visited by Princess Anne over acid attack storyline

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Princess Anne visited the set of Coronation Street today in honour of the soap’s acid attack storyline.

The Princess Royal serves as a patron for The Acid Survivors Trust International, who have been collaborating with writers and producers on the show for character Daisy Midgeley’s story.

During her visit, the Princess Royal spoke with cast and crew before viewing some upcoming scenes. She was then given a guided tour of the iconic set by producer Iain MacLeod and Head of ITV in the North/MD Continuing Drama, John Whiston.

Speaking about the special visit and the upcoming storyline, Whiston said: “Working with ASTI on this storyline has been invaluable to all of us. HRH's patronage of the charity is clearly of huge importance to both Her Royal Highness and the charity, and it was an absolute honour to have them join us at Coronation Street today.

“The visit gave both cast and colleagues the chance to discuss how they have worked together to create and portray such a delicate and important storyline, an opportunity none of us will forget,” he added.

The storyline will begin next week, with Daisy continuing to be targeted by her stalker, Justin. Actress Charlotte Jordan recently spoke about the disturbing scenes, saying the storyline will take a toll on her character.

“Daisy is just really tired at this point. She's trying to stop Justin from making her life miserable, but nothing seems to be working as the law's not really on her side,” she began. “I think it's good that this storyline has shown that. Hopefully some changes can be made there, because it's really traumatic for women who go through this.

“To do something like that with acid, I don't know how you can possibly understand it or get to that point, because it's just so evil to try and take away someone's identity and someone's face like that,” she continued. “It's so heinous and I don't even know how you can really start to think about that being someone's intention for you.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
