Coronation Street signs soap legend to play scheming battleaxe with a score to settle

A legendary soap star is set to appear in Coronation Street, with the newcomer ruffling feathers. Joel Deering (Calum Lil) will soon be paid a visit by his mum Anthea Deering, with Carol Royle taking on the role.

She is famed for appearing in shows such as Casualty, Doctors and The Bill. Carol also portrayed Lady Patricia Brewster in Heartbeat as well as Jenny Russell in BBC show Life Without George.

Anthea arrives in Weatherfield to meet Joel's girlfriend Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown), but the pair's meeting at the bistro doesn't go to plan. Dee-Dee ends up running out of the venue following a string of comments from Anthea about her family.

It remains to be seen whether Anthea will make amends with Dee-Dee and become apart of hers and Joel's life. It's also not known how long she's set to stay on the cobbles for.

Anthea's arrival comes as the mystery surrounding Lauren Bolton's (Cait Fitton) disappearance begins to come to a climax. The teen disappeared without a trace earlier this year, and Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is currently locked up in prison, having been falsely accused of her murder, with Dee-Dee working as his lawyer.

However, fans think Joel may be involved in Lauren's disappearance. The solicitor agreed to represent groomer Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) after he was arrested in connection with the case.

Nathan has returned to Weatherfield after being released from prison earlier this year. He was locked up in 2017 for grooming and exploiting Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon). Fans have questioned why Joel would agree to represent Nathan, and some think it could be part of a plan to frame the convict in a bid to cover up his own involvement in Lauren's disappearance.

Viewers will soon find out what happened to the teen, thanks to a number of special episodes of Corrie. Starting on Monday 27 May, Coronation Street has shown an episode a night from the perspectives of different characters with the episode on Thursday 30 May showing the fate of missing teen Lauren.

Viewers were given their first glimpse into the terrifying ordeal for poor Lauren during a promo. The teenager was seen attempting to flee her flat, but a masked figure behind her put a hand over her mouth. The soap hasn't confirmed that Lauren is dead despite blood being found in her flat - and there are some fans that believe she’s still alive too.
