Former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has signed for Championship club Ipswich Town on a one-year deal, it has been confirmed.

The 25-year-old left Man Utd after his contract expired in June, following Erik ten Hag’s decision not to extend his deal. This gave Ipswich the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer.

Tuanzebe graduated from the Man Utd academy after playing his way through the youth teams. He was always touted to become a star in the future, winning the Young Player of the Year Award and Reserve Player of the Year Award during his time at the club.

The centre-back made 37 appearances in total for the Red Devils. He was also part of the Man Utd squad that won the Europa League in 2017, but played the vast majority of his football elsewhere.

Three spells on loan at Aston Villa yielded some 46 games, while Tuanzebe also spent time at Italian giants Napoli, and Stoke City.

Several clubs considered a move for Tuanzebe. As reported by TEAMtalk, Sheffield United were interested in the defender, as well as LaLiga club Real Betis.

Tuanzebe has now completed his move to Ipswich, however, and manager Kieran McKenna – who is a former Man Utd assistant manager – will hope that he can help his team secure back-to-back promotions.

Ipswich Town sign Tuanzebe

Ipswich confirmed Tuanzebe’s arrival at the club with a statement on their official website. They state that the defender has signed a one-year deal, and the Tractor Boys have the option to extend it by another year.

Tuanzebe becomes Ipswich’s seventh signing following their promotion to the Championship and will wear the number 40 shirt.

Ipswich have started the season strongly, winning four and losing one of their five opening league matches. They currently sit in second place in the table, one point behind leaders Preston North End.

Tuanzebe has said he can’t wait to get started, and described why he decided to make the switch to the Portman Road Stadium.

“It feels great to finally get the deal over the line,” Axel told TownTV.

“I had conversations with the manager earlier in the summer, having worked with him previously, and it’s great to have a familiar face. Knowing the calibre of coach he is, it was a good decision to come here because I know the standards he has and how thorough he is.

“The stadium, pitch and training ground are top notch and the group is humble, willing to work and everyone wants to take the Club into a better position.

“I am delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started.”
