Concern is growing for a Scottish woman who has not been seen since New Year's Day, with her friends and family flooding social media with posts and enquiries about her whereabouts.

28-year-old Alathea Byrne, who goes by the name Alice, was last sighted at around 10am on Saturday morning (1 January) leaving a flat on Marlborough Street in Edinburgh where she had met with friends. Prior to that, she was last seen by her family at 2am on New Year's Eve, before heading to a beach party in Portobello.

Police have since launched a city-wide investigation as they search for the missing woman, who is described as being white, around 5ft 6in tall, medium sized with short black hair. At the time of her disappearance, Alice is believed to have been wearing an orange jacket, black top, black jeans and white trainers. She was also carrying a black rucksack.

Speaking about her disappearance in a press statement, Scotland Police Inspector Keith Scott said: "It is out of character for Alice not to keep in contact with her family and friends. We are becoming increasingly concerned for her wellbeing and we are working to trace her as soon as possible to ensure that she is safe and well."

"Searches and enquiries have been ongoing since she was reported missing, and we are now asking the public for any assistance they can provide," Scott added.

Local members of the public are being asked to check their outbuildings and sheds, and anyone who has seen Alice since Sunday morning, or anyone with information on her whereabouts, is urged to contact police as soon as possible.

On social media, Alice's friends and family shared a missing persons poster, with one person writing: "Alice is still missing and we [are] urging anyone with any information to come forward and contact the numbers below."

The friend continued, "The CCTV image is of Alice on the night of the 31st, she was last seen wearing this outfit so please stay vigilant! Thanks to everyone who has shared so far or who has offered to help search, we appreciate it so much."

If you have any information on Alice's whereabouts, please contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0647 of 2 January.

Our thoughts are with Alice's friends and family at this time, and we hope she will be found safe and well soon.
