Coleen Rooney hopes Wayne has ‘learnt’ from his past mistakes

Watch: Coleen Rooney speaks out

Coleen Rooney says she hopes her husband has “learnt” from his past mistakes and will not get into “horrible situations” in future.

The wife of the former England star said his past behaviour was “not acceptable” but she would have to “live with it”.

The couple have been together since they met at school aged 12, and despite a series of much-reported indiscretions from Wayne, they have never parted, and Coleen has remained at his side.

In 2018, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work after admitting being nearly three times the legal drink drive limit while at the wheel of another woman’s car following a night out.

Following the incident, the 35 year-old vowed to make their marriage work. Speaking about the decision in the new Amazon Prime documentary, Rooney, Coleen said: “When you’re making those decisions you’ve got to focus on what you want and not what else.

“Obviously, I listen to the people who matter to me – my mum and dad and they’ve always given me a positive outlook on things and (said) there’s nothing that we can’t deal with.

“Hopefully he’s learnt and he doesn’t get himself into any horrible situations again."

Though she has forgiven him, the mum of four and 'Chief Wag' - now affectionately known as 'Wagatha Christie' after her sleuthing over leaked messages - added, “it’s happened and I’ve got to live with it and if I couldn’t cope with living with it, I would have ended the relationship.”

Coleen said she had “moved on” from previous incidents that had happened at a different stage of their lives.

“It’s not acceptable what he’s done, but it’s happened and that was in the stage of life we were in at the time, but we’ve moved on,” she said.

“I forgive him but it wasn’t acceptable. If it comes up, we’d talk about it like we’re talking about it now. I haven’t got the anger I did at the time.”

They began dating when they both turned 16 and have four sons together – Kai Wayne, Klay Anthony, Kit Joseph and Cass Mac.

With tricky timing, the documentary airs as Coleen is embroiled in a bitter legal dispute with fellow WAG and ex-friend Rebekah Vardy, wife of Leicester City player Jamie Vardy.

In an October 2019 Twitter post, Coleen, 35, accused Ms Vardy, 39, of leaking stories about her private life after a months-long “sting operation” – earning her the now famous “Wagatha Christie” nickname.

Wayne, 36, also opens up in the new documentary, saying: "People still look at me in a different way.

'For me it's important that people remember me for who I am rather than what I've done."

Now the boss of Derby County, Wayne is still dogged by his mistakes, including a scandal when he visited prostitutes as a teenager, then at 18, tabloids had a field day when it emerged that in 2004, then- Manchester United star Wayne paid £140 for sex with prostitute Charlotte Glover.

He was alleged to have slept with a 48-year-old woman known as the "auld slapper" at a Liverpool brothel.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain presenter Ben Shephard this week, he revealed that his 'benders' were a way of coping with his high-pressure career and fame.

"I'd go home and drink for two days straight," he said. "I'd wake up rough, eye drops, chewing gum, mouth wash, try to dust yourself off."

Wayne also revealed his romantic side which features in his relationship with Coleen, confessing, "I like writing poems and when we'd go to bed I'd leave one on the breakfast table for when she wakes up."

He admitted that the worst consequence of his mistakes was seeing Coleen vilified.

"The difficult part of it was people were judging Coleen and her decisions. Does she stay with me, does she leave me - and I know that was difficult for her," he added.

"But as I said before, I make mistakes and a lot of people make mistakes and it's recovering from those, that's what shapes you into a better person."

Wayne no longer drinks 'unsupervised', and had to apologise to both Coleen and his club last summer after being photographed in a budget hotel room with a group of lingerie-wearing girls.

Coleen said: “I do think it’s amazing that we are where we are today. We’re lucky that we both had the strength and support of each other and the people around us to keep going.

"That’s something we’ve had to work hard at. I wouldn’t be standing here if I hadn’t forgiven him.”

Rooney launches on Friday, 11 February, on Prime Video.
