Homeland fans are going to see Claire Danes star in a very different kind of TV drama very soon after the actor replaced Keira Knightley in Apple Original series The Essex Serpent. The Emmy winner is set to play the lead role in the series adapted from Sarah Perry's bestselling 2016 novel of the same name. Here's what we know about the series so far:
What will The Essex Serpent be about?
The book is set in the Victorian era and tells the tale of newly widowed Cora Seaborne who, having broken away from an abusive marriage, relocates from London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex. There, she becomes engrossed in a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area. The Selfish Giant's Clio Barnard will be directing the series while Deep Water's Anna Symon will serve as lead writer.
Who will star in The Essex Serpent?
Keira Knightley initially signed on to play Cora, but she dropped out of the project in October 2020 citing childcare concerns amid the pandemic. Now, as far as casting news goes, the only name attached to the project is Claire's. It will be her first TV gig since she finished filming the final season of Homeland in 2019.
When will The Essex Serpent be on TV?
The series is still only in pre-production so there's no sign of a release date yet, but watch this space. It will air exclusively on Apple TV when it does eventually drop.
