In amongst the breakups and drama, there are a few strong romantic bonds that shine through in Hollywood. Along with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, and John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, is Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, who met on the set of a music video in 2007 and have been together ever since.
Here's a look back on their relationship timeline, featuring the birth of their children, red carpet appearances, and what happened on their wedding day, and starting with the latest update.
28 December 2020: Chrissy has shared a throwback picture from the day she first met John Legend. Taking part in the viral Instagram picture Q&A, the mum of two was asked to share a picture from the pair's very first encounter, which was back in 2006 at the filming of the singer's 'Stereo' music video. The vintage picture shows a young Chrissy, dressed in her underwear, and John dancing together. After filming for 12 hours, the pair ended up spending a night together in John's hotel room. And, as we all know, the rest is history...
Oh, and if you've not yet laid eyes on the truly fantastic music video, you can check it out right here:
September 2006 - how the pair first met
Chrissy and John meet on the set of his music video for 'Stereo', where Chrissy played his love interest for the shoot. She later revealed in 2014 that after the shoot, the pair went back to John's hotel room, ate In-N-Out burgers and hooked up.
"We did the music video, we were together for like 12 hours,” she told Wendy Williams seven years later. "We spent the entire day together, me in my underwear and him in a full suit, and I went to go say goodbye to him, to his hotel and we didn’t ever say goodbye that night."
Despite getting it on that evening, Chrissy and John didn't actually get together properly until many months later, with the model explaining to Cosmopolitan in 2014 that she didn't want to put pressure on the singer. "I let him be himself for a while," she said. "The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, ‘There’s so much more out there.’ I played it cool for a long time. Never once did I ask, ‘What are we?’ Marriage was never my goal, because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him."
Early 2007 - a brief break up
The pair had a brief break up. And by 'brief', we mean a matter of hours. After Chrissy joined John on tour, the singer got sick, and tried to say he was better off single.
"I was on tour with him and he’d gotten sick," Teigen told Cosmopolitan in 2016. "He was feeling really bummed and stressed out. He was like, ‘I can’t be in a relationship right now.’ That lasted for one day. Literally, a day. I knew it came from a place other than us not working. It was the stress of him having to maybe cancel a show, and he had never been in a real relationship—or so he says now. I always joke, ‘Remember when you tried to break up with me?’ He’s like, ‘Yes, sorry. Big mistake.'"
John even claims the break up was less than a half hour. "I was just like: 'I'd just be happier single right now,'" he told The Guardian in 2017.. "And she was like: 'No.'"
Summer 2007 - their first couples' holiday
Chrissy and John take their first holiday, to Lake Como on Italy - something which Chrissy later shared on Instagram. "A boat tour guide took us to a little spot on the lake and told us to make a wish," she wrote in 2016. "I asked for this to be the man I marry and have children with. I think John asked for the most perfect bite of cacio e pepe. Both came true, and here we are."
February 2008 - their red carpet debut
The pair make their red carpet debut as a couple, at the Grammy awards.
December 2011 - an engagement!
Five years after meeting, and four years after they first started dating, John proposes to Chrissy on holiday in the Maldives. Dramatically, airport security almost ruined the whole surprise. “[The ring] was in my carry-on bag going through airport security, and security wanted to look through my bag and they wanted to look in that particular box," Legend later shared on Oprah’s Next Chapter.
"And Chrissy was standing right next to me and I was, like, ‘Oh, my God. I’ve hid it so well this whole time. Now as we’re just about to get to the Maldives she’s going to find out I have a ring in this box and it’s going to ruin the surprise and I’ll have to get on my knees in the airport.'"
But it all worked out in the end, and it sounds absolutely perfect. Chrissy later divulged, "We get to the Maldives and he had planned this beautiful Christmas. He knows how much I love Christmas, and this waiter comes out with a silver dome for dessert. So he opens up the dome and a ton of arugula falls out and then I kind of fish in it, and I see the little box and then you know—your heart stops and you get so excited," Teigen said. "There was no big grand speech or anything. I think it was just very lovely and sweet."
September 10, 2013 - their official wedding
Days before their big wedding in Italy, the pair tied the knot officially in New York. "We actually got married after going to a couple Fashion Week shows at Vera Wang, ironically who actually did my dress, but we got married at the courthouse right after," Teigen told E! News, adding that model Irina Shayk served as a witness. "We are dumb and didn't realize that our Italian wedding would not be recognized unless we had a real ceremony in New York City."
September 14, 2013 - their Lake Como wedding ceremony
Chrissy and John tied the knot with a ceremony in Lake Como, Italy, which John later described as "rustic-chic, elegant-but-not-too-glossy" to Martha Stewart Weddings. "One of the first vacations we took together was to Lake Como, so we thought it would be nice to marry where we fell in love."
September 2013 - the pair film John's 'All Of Me' music video
While in Lake Como, the pair filmed the music video for 'All Of Me', which features footage from their wedding day, as well as an intimate look at their relationship. Chrissy later tells the Huffington Post she knew the song was about her, explaining, "The first line of it is, 'What would I do without your smart mouth,' so if that's not about me I don't know what is.
"I did cry when I heard it. I'm emotional, but like I don't really don't cry at things like that so yeah, it was beautiful. And live it's pretty unreal."
Chrissy and John cover DuJour magazine and open up about their desire to have a family. "We want a lot of kids," Teigen said. "I would love to have three or four of my own, and then adopt a few. So basically I'll be pregnant the rest of my life."
October 2015 - Chrissy is pregnant with their first child!
Congratulations are in order: Chrissy and John announce the model is expecting their first child through IVF, with Chrissy taking to Instagram to share the happy news.
"John and I are so happy to announce that we are pregnant :) As many of you know, we've been trying to have a baby for a while now. It hasn't been easy, but we kept trying because we can't wait to bring our first child into the world and grow our family. We're so excited that it's finally happening. Thank you for all your love and well wishes. I look forward to all the belly touching! Xx"
April 2016 - Chrissy and John welcome their daughter, Luna Simone Stephens 😍
John shared the first photo of their daughter on Instagram without a caption, while Chrissy later opened up with a personal essay about her struggles with postpartum depression. "I know [John] must look over at times and think: My God, get it together. But he has never made me feel that way," she wrote. "I love John and Luna more than I can imagine loving anything, and John and I still hope to give Luna a few siblings. Postpartum hasn't changed that."
November 2017 - Chrissy announced she's pregnant with their second child
And giving Luna a sibling is exactly what they did, with Chrissy announcing she was pregnant with their second child on Instagram with her daughter's help. "It's John's!" she wrote, with a video of Luna saying "baby" while patting Chrissy's tummy. So cute.
Chrissy also shared her second child would be a boy, was also conceived through IVF.
April 2018 - Chrissy opens up about IVF
The model opened up to The Cut about how "devastating" it was when the first found of IVF didn't work. "It's a complete miracle when it works. There are so many people that still struggle, even with access to IVF," she said. "You hear stories about IVF working the first try. But you'll hear a lot more stories about when it takes a few times.
"You just look for anything to blame, especially yourself. I think hearing stories is just really important. You realise there's no right way to do it, or right way to react."
May 2018 - Miles Theodore Stephens is born!
Chrissy, John, Luna and Miles are now a very happy family of four, with the model announcing the birth of their second child and first son on Twitter. "Somebody’s herrrrrrre!" she wrote with a baby bottle and hugging emoji.
