Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have shared the deeply sad news that they have lost their baby son mid-way through pregnancy. The couple, who already have two children via IVF, announced their pregnancy this summer after their surprise at conceiving naturally. They were expecting a little boy.

But earlier this week, 34-year-old Chrissy was admitted to hospital when bleeding she'd been experiencing for about a month intensified. 'Every time I would go to the bathroom [there] would be blood... but today the big difference was that it was kind of like if you were to just turn a faucet on low and just leave it there,' the cookbook author shared on Instagram Stories.

Chrissy had been on intense bed rest prior to her hospital admission, but despite the best efforts of her medical team, tragically her baby son was unable to be saved. This morning, she posted a series of intimate black and white pictures of herself, her husband John Legend, and their baby son – who they had named Jack.

'We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,' Chrissy wrote.

Chrissy had previously explained, in the simplest of terms (as she put it), that the problem was a 'really, really weak placenta'. Earlier in the week, however, she had described her unborn child as 'so healthy' despite the circumstances. 'He moves a lot, he moved so much earlier than [Luna and Miles] ever did' she shared. 'But basically, he is the strongest, coolest dude in, like, the shittiest house. His house is falling apart,' she said, continuing the analogy of her uterus.

On her devastating post sharing the awful news with her followers, Chrissy added: 'We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.

'To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you.'

Chrissy also went on to thank 'everyone who has been sending us positive energy, thoughts and prayers. We feel all of your love and truly appreciate you.

'We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience. But everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.'

John Legend hasn't yet posted the difficult news on Instagram.

We are so, so sad to hear what's happened, and can only imagine how difficult this is for Chrissy, John and the rest of their family. Our love and thoughts are with them, and here's hoping they can all pull together to share in their grief.
