Chris Evans has hinted that Peter Kay could make a public comeback on Tuesday night at the National Television Awards.

The beloved comedian has stepped away from the limelight since he cancelled his stand-up tour in December 2017.

Speaking during his second day at Virgin Radio, Evans said: “Peter Kay, He’s not a mate, but I know him. I know he’s been getting better and he’s coming back and he may well be back on telly tonight. Back for the NTAs.”

Kay was photographed in his hometown of Bolton, Greater Manchester, last week. This was the first time he had been spotted in public in nine months.

Kay’s hit BBC comedy series Car Share is up for a nomination at the NTAs under the Best Comedy category for the second year in a row.

Widely expected to win after scooping last year’s award, his co-star Sian Gibson also hinted that he will be attending the prestigious awards.

She tweeted: ‘Woohooooo we are going to the NTAs – we would absolutely love to get an NTA for the last ever Car Share, so would be so kind if you could vote!’

Many have presumed that the ‘we’ means the actress will be attending with Kay. Prior to Kay’s Bolton sighting, he had been seen out and about since last April, when he attended the Blackpool Opera House for a charity screening of Car Share.

The exact nature of Kay’s withdrawal from both his public and professional life remains unknown. In a December 2017 post, Kay stated he was cancelling his tour due to ‘unforeseen family circumstances.’

The statement read: “Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects. This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance For Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

“My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.

I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again, I’m very sorry.”

The National Television Awards are on ITV on Tuesday 22nd January from 7:30pm.
