Last month, professional chef Morgan Hipworth shared a video on TikTok of him making homemade chips that were so delicious, he claimed they were better than McDonald’s fries. A big claim, right?

But seeing as his chips were INCREDIBLE, we thought we’d look to him for some more advice on potato side dishes – this time, we’re talking mashed potatoes.

Morgan, who owns Bistro Morgan Bakehouse in Melbourne, took to TikTok to share his tip for getting the creamiest mashed potatoes of your life, and we’re now wondering why we never thought of this before.

Morgan says the key to making mashed potatoes that are super-creamy and free from lumps is to boil milk before adding it to your mashed potatoes.

So simple.

Now, people add all sorts of things to their mashed potatoes, including butter (which Morgan also adds), and I actually always add mayonnaise – don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. And, yes, milk is one of those things people add too, but we’re guessing not many people think to boil the milk first.

If you think about it, boiled milk always goes lovely and thick and frothy, so of course that’s going to make your mashed potatoes even creamier and more tasty.

Morgan also uses a ricer, which is a great bit of kit if you hate using a potato masher as much as I do, which is A LOT.

So pop a potato ricer in your online shopping basket, get that milk on the hob so you can have bangers and mash for dinner.
